About Me

The short story...

I left a career in Hollywood to pursue my dream of living in a small, quiet town and writing novels. I have an author crush on Charlotte Bronte, and a real crush on my author wife, YA bestseller Kelly Oram. We live outside Phoenix with our four kids and our cat, Mr. Darcy.

The longer story...

I was born on a blustery day in...just kidding. (No, but my mom does tell me that I was born on a really weird day that had every form of weather, from sunshine to clouds and rain to wind and snow and hail. That's got to be a sign that something amazing was about to happen.)

I've always been a writer. The first real stories I wrote were fan fiction from the Alien film franchise, which I was obsessed with as a teenager. That, and The Little Mermaid. Seriously. Because I also wanted to be a Disney animator. To this day I still include both of those films in my top five. Mom and Dad must have been confused in those days, wondering which path would ultimately claim me: the G-rated sing-along artist, or the nightmare horror of exploding chests and space marines. I recognize now how contradicting I must have seemed back then. Almost split personality. If Aliens or Terminator wasn't in my VHS player, then Little Mermaid was. If not Michael Crichton books, then Charlotte Bronte. If not "Baby Got Back" in my walkman, then the soundtrack to Aladdin.

In the end, I took both paths--we'll call them the light and the dark--and I still do to this day. I did become an animator, but not for Disney. And I do write dark horror, but not in the Aliens universe (though that remains a dream project of mine). After studying film at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, I moved to LA with my new bride Kelly. This was 2001. We married four days after 9/11. I started out as an entry level runner at a post production house in Santa Monica, then moved up to assistant editor before finally landing as a motion graphics artist and character animator. During that time I learned the craft of storytelling by writing screenplays, none of which ever sold. During long drives to visit family, Kelly and I would talk through story points and plot devices and three act structures, and from those discussions Kelly developed confidence in her own skills as a writer. After deciding we both wanted to pursue the dream of writing novels for a living, we traded LA for a quiet town outside of Phoenix and set to the work of publishing our stories.

I embrace my split personality now. If it's not Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, it's Pride and Prejudice (the 6 hour version, of course); if it's not Stephen King, it's (still) Charlotte Bronte, who is by far my favorite author, because of Jane Eyre and Villette, which I read over and over. And now my split tastes are manifesting in my writing. My first novel, Dolls, is dark supernatural horror that received a cringe and a disturbed look from Mom. My second novel (co-written with Kelly) is Joni, Underway, a poignant coming of age story with a sweet romance. Then there are the off days and nights, when I chip away with mad-scientist fervor at a dream project, the amalgamation of all my sensibilities: a dark gothic horror with monsters and romance and Charlotte Bronte narration - everything all rolled into one. Like the weather that day I was born. See, I'm telling you, there's something to that.
